You probably grew up learning the basics of oral hygiene: brush twice a day and floss once. If your parents used mouthwash, they may have taught you to do so as well. But what if I told you there was more you can do for your oral health? Here are some things to consider:
– Guard against Dry Mouth: Your saliva is amazing because it works 24/7 to keep your mouth clean. If you develop a condition called dry mouth, your salivary glands will underproduce saliva, resulting in greater susceptibility to such dental issues as tooth decay and gum disease. Watch for medications that have dry mouth as a side effect, breath out of your nose instead of your mouth, and make sure to keep your mouth well hydrated.
– Watch your Diet: Sugary, starchy, and acidic foods can damage your teeth, so limit your intake, and when you do eat them, please include with water-rich, healthy foods in your meals that strengthen your teeth, containing ingredients such as phosphorus, calcium and fluoride. Spinach, carrots, apples, and dairy foods are good examples to try.
– Examine Your Teeth: While we suggest visiting our dental team twice a year, you’ll have more opportunity to recognize changes in your teeth at home. For example, you may notice swollen gums, a chipped or discolored tooth, or an unusual sore in your mouth. If you spot anything like this, please call Garth Collins, DDS as soon as possible.
